Zaklada "Kultura nova"

Kultura Nova Edition

Kultura Nova Foundation publishes various publications that deal with relevant topics for its scope of work within the framework of Research and Development Department activities.

  • Notebook for socio-cultural centers

In 2015, the Foundation published the "Notebook for Socio-cultural Centers" that are founded on the ideas of civil-public partnership and participatory governance. The publication was created for the "Towards Institutional Pluralism: Development of Socio-cultural Centers" gathering that was organized by the Foundation and held from 12th to 14th November 2015 in Gliptoteka HAZU in Zagreb. Socio-cultural centers are being looked at from the perspective of cultural policy and are set in the cultural landscape, drawing out their lines and describing their specificities, including the wider historical perspective. The notebook points to the fact that there are no unique solutions and debates on socio-cultural centers because every community is different, every socio-cultural center creates its own model in harmony with its local situation – cultural, social, economic and political and the available resources and information. The notebook brings working definitions of concepts and terms that are offered up for further elaboration in each individual socio-cultural center. All offered elements can be chosen, combined or taken out, lines can be added or shortened, depending on the local situations and needs.

  • Conquering the work space

Within the framework of the Kultura Nova Edition, in 2016 the Foundation published the "Conquering the Work Space. Working Conditions in Civil Society Organizations in the Field of Contemporary Arts and Culture" publication whose authors are Valerija Barada, Jaka Primorac and Edgar Buršić. The study brings an overall analysis of everyday praxis and conditions of creation, which gives significant insight into the civil sector system in contemporary arts and culture. The data was collected through quantitative and qualitative research, and it was processed including the sector, organizational and individual level. A very important aspect of the publication refers to the working conditions in the cultural and creative sector at the international level where it becomes clear that the working world is also insecure and unstable, and recommendations are put forth for consideration that could be useful in the further improvements of the institutional and legislative frameworks for the support to development of art, culture and civil society.

  • Custom tailored

The "Custom Tailored? Praxis and Tendencies of Cultural Education in Croatia" study was published in the Kultura Nova Edition in 2016, and the author is Ana Žuvela. It entails a wide array of issues in education and culture, from understanding the role and significance of culture and cultural and artistic education in contemporary society to European policy and good praxis analysis and insight into the Croatian cultural and educational policy systems and it questions the advantages and the weaknesses of developmental cultural policy in educational praxis and advocates for the significance of artistic and cultural education for sustainable development of the cultural sector.

  • Do it together

Within the framework of the Kultura Nova Edition, the Foundation published the "Do it Together. Practices and Tendencies of Participatory Governance in Culture in the Republic of Croatia" collection of papers in 2018 in Croatian and English. The collection of papers was created within the framework of the two-year project "Approaches to Participatory Governance of Cultural Institutions" that the Foundation implemented with the support of the UNESCO International Fund for Cultural Diversity (IFCD). Based on all the collected data, conducted analysis and gained insights, this publication was created as a joint work of the researchers and the director of the Foundation and serving as notes for cultural policy. Besides the wide theoretical coverage and analysis of concepts such as cultural participation, decentralization, local cultural planning and development and participatory governance in culture, the book included the creation of seven case studies comprising seven different models of participatory governance of socio-cultural centers that are being developed in different parts of Croatia: Lazareti Socio-Cultural Centre in Dubrovnik, Community Centre Čakovec in Čakovec, Socio-Cultural Centre in Karlovac, Molekula in Rijeka, Rojc Community Centre in Pula, Youth Home in Split and Pogon — Zagreb Centre for Independent Culture and Youth in Zagreb. The book also proposes recommendations and analytical framework for changes in the cultural policy.

  • Results of the research on the COVID-19 pandemic and Zagreb earthquake

At the beginning of 2021 the Foundation published the "Impact of COVID-19 and Zagreb Earthquake on CSOs in Contemporary Culture and Arts. Results of the Test Phase of the Research" publication, that was written by Krešimir Krolo, Željka Tonković, Dea Vidović and Ana Žuvela. The publication presents the results of the first phase of the longitudinal research on the impact of COVID-19 pandemic and the earthquake that hit Zagreb on 22nd March 2020 on CSOs in contemporary culture and arts. The Foundation started the research within the framework of the Research and Development Department in May 2020. Some of the key motives for this research, besides the obvious need to empirically look at the consequences of the effect of the global crisis and the earthquake on the cultural and artistic sector, include the necessity that these consequences have to be explored from a number of perspectives – the role and position of arts and culture in social and economic processes during the crisis, simultaneous processes of vulnerability and resilience of the cultural sector, consequences of the spill over of negative effects of the crisis on the cultural and artistic sector and the overall ecosystem and policy making, i.e. looking at instruments, mechanisms and measures of international, national and local public policies implemented for restraining the immediate and long-term impacts of the crisis.

  • Impacts of COVID-19 pandemic and earthquakes on cultural sector in Croatia

Following the test phase of the Kultura Nova Foundation’s research, whose results were published at the end of 2020, the Croatian Ministry of Culture and Media has in collaboration with the Foundation conducted a research on the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic and earthquakes on the entire cultural sector in the Republic of Croatia. The results of the research are publiched in the "Impacts of COVID-19 pandemic and earthquakes on cultural sector in Republic of Croatia. Report on the research results" publication. The research was conceptualized and conducted in collaboration with researchers dr. sc. Željka Tonković, dr. sc. Ana Žuvela and dr. sc. Krešimir Krolo, and led by dr. sc. Dea Vidović, the director of the Foundation, while the research coordinator was Marta Jalšovec, the associate in the Foundation’s R&D Department. Professional support by the Ministry of Culture and Media was provided by Nevena Tudor Perković and Dinko Klarić. The research analyses different segments of the impact and resilience of the cultural sector, as well as measures to support the sector that were implemented in response to the crisis. The research data confirmed that the COVID-19 pandemic and the earthquakes drastically affected the cultural sector in Croatia. Based on the analysis, the authors of the research formulated recommendations for upgrading the cultural system and implementing future measures that could respond to the specific needs of various actors in the cultural sector and thus speed up and facilitate their recovery.

  • Inside and Out

In the framework of the Kultura Nova Edition, the Foundation has published a manual "Inside and Out. Methods and Practices of Organisational Transformation for Participation in culture".
