Mobility in culture
The European Cultural Foundation, MitOst and Kultura Nova Foundation implemented the "i-Portunus Houses – Kick-Start a Local Mobility Host Network for Artists & Cultural Professionals in All Creative Europe Countries" project which included research on mobility in culture carried out by experts from different disciplines among whom were Tsveta Andreeva, Marta Jalšovec, Ana Žuvela, Petra Rodik, Toni Attard, Vedran Horvat and the Institute for political ecology, with Dea Vidović being the research leader. As a result of the aforementioned research, in 2022 Kultura Nova Foundation issued the publication consisting of 4 interconnected volumes. Each volume of the publication represents one of the research sections: (1) conceptual framework of mobility in culture; (2) the study on mobility in culture from the perspectives of artists, cultural professionals, hosts and funders; (3) an evaluation of i-Portunus Houses mobility grant scheme and (4) scenario for the future of mobility in culture.
Volume 1 of the i-Portunus publication, "Mobility in Culture: Conceptual Frameworks and Approaches", addresses different aspects of mobility in culture, highlighting current thinking and perspectives and suggesting the main challenges for the future. The book features eight chapters written by scholars/researchers and prominent voices from different parts of Europe, covering mobility from a variety of angles: the mobility studies, EU policies for the mobility in culture, mobility formats and challenges, perspectives of artists and cultural professionals, digital mobility, role of hosts in mobility, significance of mobility for the local community as well as ecological politics for mobility. The contributing authors are Jordi Baltà Portolés, Taru Elfving, Višnja Kisić, Marie Le Sourd, Mark Robinson, Noel B. Salazar, Goran Tomka, Helen Varley Jamieson, Dea Vidović, Claire Rosslyn Wilson and Ana Žuvela.
Volume 2 "Study on Mobility in Culture: Perspectives of Artists/Cultural Professionals, Hosts, and Funders" features an exploratory analysis of experiences, practices, needs, priorities and views of different actors concerning mobility in culture. The research was conducted through qualitative and quantitative methods, and, based on the collected data, the recommendations for the improving cross-border mobility infrastructure in culture were developed. The authors of this Volume are Marta Jalšovec, Petra Rodik, Dea Vidović and Ana Žuvela.
Volume 3 "Stories of Mobility: Evaluation of the i-Portunus Houses Grant Scheme", presents the evaluation results of the grant scheme developed in the framework of the i-Portunus Houses project through which the grants were awarded to hosts for the mobility of artists and cultural professionals. In order to assess the outcomes of the i-Portunus Houses grant scheme, the evaluation comprehended the experiences of both hosts and artists/cultural professionals. Authors of the evaluation study are Petra Rodik and Marta Jalšovec.
Volume 4 "Scenario for the Future of Mobility in Culture" introduces the concept of slow mobility as an answer to the recognised needs for change in cultural mobility. The concept emerged from the theoretical insights, gathered data and analysis represented in first three volumes of the publication and was developed in the framework of the workshop dedicated to future planning. The participants of the workshop were Toni Attard, Philipp Dietachmair, Vedran Horvat, Dea Vidović and Ana Žuvela, the moderator was Jonas Drechsel, while the authors of the volume are Dea Vidović and Ana Žuvela.
The four-volume publication was edited by Nancy Duxbury and Dea Vidović and designed by Superstudio Design Projects. The four volumes are published in English language, both in electronic and print editions, under the Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International licence.
The i-Portunus Houses project was implemented on behalf of the European Commission by a consortium of three partners—the European Cultural Foundation (coordinator), MitOst, and Kultura Nova Foundation. The project was dedicated to testing and analysing diverse transnational mobility schemes for the cultural sector. More information on the project is available here.
