Zaklada "Kultura nova"

Inside and Out

In the framework of the Kultura Nova Edition, Foundation has published a manual "Inside and Out. Methods and Practices of Organisational Transformation for Participation in culture".

The publication, dedicated to participation in culture, gives an overview of the development and relations between cultural policies and participation. It considers disagreements and misunderstandings regarding audience as key challenges of the cultural sector in terms of participation, and presents different practices that integrate participation in the overall operating of the organisation. The publication is produced in the framework of the European project ADESTE+ (Audience DEvelopment STrategies for cultural organisations in Europe) dedicated to developing methodology which would support organisations in culture when implementing transition towards a stronger audience centred approach. Thus, it is also a document of the experiences, knowledge, and insights from various meetings and the project itself. It was conceived as a manual to be used by anyone interested in delving into the issue of audience development and citizen participation in cultural production.

Publication is organized in three sections. The first one consists of contributions providing an overview of the history and extent of the audience development, the contradictions and barriers it is trying to overcome as well as policy framework supporting participatory practices. The authors of the articles in this section are Goran Tomka, Maria Vlachou, Cristina da Milano and Antonija Letinić. The central part of the publication presents the ACED methodology developed through the project ADESTE+, reviews of artistic partners that have worked on its implementation in their organisations and the iteration of the methodology which Kultura Nova Foundation has developed for small- and mid-size organisations. The third part of the publication is dedicated to the examples of practices of the organisations in South-East Europe which have been working on the development of practices for citizens’ participation for years. Those practices were presented in the framework of the Waterfall workshops for Croatian organisations in the spring of 2022 organised by Kultura Nova Foundation as a part of the ADESTE+ project. Darko Lukić concludes the publication with an overview of the needs in cultural sector and the answers proposed by ADESTE+, as well as experiences with the methodology.

Publication, edited by Antonija Letinić and designed by Petra Milički, is published in Croatian and English languages, both in electronic and print editions, under the Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International licence and can be downloaded here.

Project ADESTE+ is implemented with the support of the EU programme Creative Europe.
